Subject: Any other DAPs with playlisting features like Karma/Vibez?
I never owned a Karma, but I do have a Carbon with the last DC firmware and was satisfied owner of a Vibez (R.I.P) until late last year.  One thing I loved about the Vibez was the playlisting capability implemented by the latter beta firmwares (something that was apparently available on the Karma).

My question is are there any other DAPs out there with similar (or exact :) capabilities?  Since this whole Vibez F thing seems to have fallen through, I'm back to using my Carbon, but I'm currently looking for something with flash memory, and more of it.

The D2 sounds nice, as does the Sansa Fuze.  I love that both have expandable memory.  And apparently the D2 has a similar EQ to that of the Vibez? Not completely sure on that.  But in descriptions/reviews I can't seem to find much about how their playlisting works.

Would anyone with firsthand knowledge be able to shed some light here?  Thanks in advance.  I'll continue doing research and maybe update if I'm able to answer these questions myself.

The Fuze's on-the-fly playlisting capabilities are limited to a single "on the go" list which you can add to and subtract from, but not save or rearrange within. I'm not sure about the D2, but I believe it has similar limitations. Robust OTF playlisting is sadly a rarity with stock players these days. I believe the latest touch-based iPods offer more leeway on this front, but certainly not to the extent of the Karma/Vibez. For that you'll likely have to go with a Rockboxed player like the v1 Sansa e280. Pluses there are expandable memory and the rich feature set that Rockbox offers. Minuses are lower sound quality and the potential difficulty of obtaining a version 1 player. Of course, if progress on bringing Rockbox to the Fuze continues unabated, we may have a stellar Vibez replacement on the horizon.

Thanks for the input, epithet.

I'll keep posted on the rockbox forum for updates on the Fuze situation.  It's a relatively inexpensive player that would fit my needs storage-wise with the purchase of a couple of SD cards, so I may end up with that one for now and hold out hope for rockbox.

/Checks out the Fuze....

Wow. An 8 G Fuze is less then $100 at B&H. Add an 8 G card for that sweet spot (to me) 16G's....
I may be sold.

There isn't anything out there that has something like the DJ feature, is there? :(
Rockbox maybe?

Not exactly like the DJ, but I hear you can do some fairly clever things with the Rockbox database.  I've never used it though.

This morning I decided to do a search for a DAP with a bare minimum of graphic EQ and 20GB storage. Just wanted to check here to see if the Karma/Vibez had been re-born. Too bad, I really miss all those features.

The only real option I've found so far is a Sansa Clip+, but I'm worried that having to add an external SDHC card to get the full 20+GB might cause problems like spontaneous library rebuilds and such.

I don't think Rockbox is even trying to do anything with the iPod Classic, but I can't believe the jailbreakers haven't figured out a way to get graphic EQ onto the iPhone/Touch.

So what's the most Karma-like 20GB DAP out there? Right now the only way I can play my music collection with custom EQ is to stream the audio from iTunes to a set of bluetooth earphones and use the iPhone as a remote. Totally sucks.

"Rockbox" doesn't do anything.  Interested owners with the devices and know-how make ports :P.  The nano2g port is pretty far along, which paves the way for newer nanos and even the classics, to some degree.

Touché. Maybe we should start a fund to give some reputable expert the incentive to work on it. :)

Looks like the Clip+ is a no-go. According to Amazon it has a 2k song limit.

Fuze is better then the Clip+ anyway. Has a real screen.
I did wind up with a Fuze. 8,000 song limit.
Then I put Rockbox on it... went from occasional use to daily. I love it. I got the 4GB model with a 16GB card.
KEEP IN MIND ONLY THE V1 FUZE (no longer in production) WORKS WITH ROCKBOX! And, of course, no way to tell from the outside if it's a V1 or V2.

Nice that Sansa added Flac and OGG support in a FW release recently, though. Big drawback to the Fuze with the Sansa Firmware: Playlisting is shite. I mean shite. Capital SHITE. "Fisher Price like" compared to Vibez/Carbon/Karma.
You are only allowed ONE OTF Playlist. All you can do it ADD TO PLAYLIST. No insert, append, enque, reorder... and a 200 song limit.

right now Im running an rockboxed ipod video 5.5 gen- and it's pretty good as far as rockboxed ports go. The only thing Im not crazy about is the drive seek time... Perhaps a SSD upgrade in the future (and one for my Karma for that matter)

Guess I can live without decent OTF playlists. Does the Fuze have any issues with the external card? I don't want to have to wait two minutes for a library database rebuild every time I turn it on. Does it take noticably longer to access tracks on the card, etc? After all the hiccups with the Sansa M260, I'm a little hesitant to pull the trigger on another Sandisk player as it is.

Right now I just want 20GB and graphic EQ, anything else is bonus. I'd prefer flash storage and pocket-friendly, but at this point I'm ready to build a netbook thigh-holster and buy an earphone extension cord. :)
