Keep in mind that fat-piping 5000 tracks into a player is going to heat up the platters, and maybe battery also. That can cause erratic behavior.

I guess that could explain the problem I had while I was listening, but I think the player had been off for a while when I tried the first few transfers (the ones that failed), so that doesn't explain all of it.

Also, someone mentioned the software has a limit factor of 10,000 tracks, something I've never come close to with my 60 gig players, but which you theoretically could easily do with compressed tracks.

Really? That's a bummer. Well, it'll be a while before I hit that limit...

Nope, take a look at this post.

Update: I was hesitant to listen to music at first, but I decided to try anyway. So far, I've been listening for 4.5 hours (random play all), and the Karma hasn't rebooted since that first time 5-10 minutes in.

My battery is 1 or 2 pixels above 50% right now, so I'll probably get about 9 hours of listening time. 80% of the tracks are OGGs. EQ is off. Grado SR60s at volume 10. I'm just mentioning this because I replaced the battery with one that claimed to be 2200mAh. It's not looking much different from the stock battery, right? Then again, the new hard drive could be drawing more power...

The larger hard drive will certainly draw more power, but not all that much more. Certainly not twice as much. I'd reckon- totally unofficially, about 15-20% more at most because of the dual platters. Keeping in mind that vorbis requires the most processing power of the codecs the Karma can handle, your experience looks to be within normal expectations.

I had a long road trip last week, and forgot my car charger for my Rio. The unit I brought has a 60 gig with dual platters, but I can't recall how old the battery is. It's certainly nowhere near new. I was kicking myself because I figured it would totally drain over the 8 hour drive, but it actually had a few hours left when I got back home. I think I played all flac, flatty- EQ'd,  and around 13 on volume, running through the car stereo.

Wow, that's remarkable. I switched form ogg to mp3 because I was getting ~6 hours of playtime with ogg.

The CPU power, and thus battery power, needed to play Vorbis files depends a lot on the bitrate. High-bitrate files take a lot more processing.

I think more than anything I've slowly trashed the battery. I've left my Karma in my car during the Minnesota winter...a LOT.

My vorbis files where ~192 bitrate.

Mine are also ~192kbps (q6). So it sounds like the new battery is at least as good as the original, and maybe a little bit better...

Batteries are a pretty easy replacement, but yeah, cold is not so good to them.
Leaving a player in a freezing cold car, I'd be scared to turn it on the next day for fear the platter and read-arm would expand unevenly and lock up or something equally disastrous.

Subject: Newb with an issue
Hello,

I'm new to this site: I mod'd my Karma w/ CF adapter, Transcend 32GB CF and new battery. After charging the battery when I turn on the Karma the RIO log comes spiraling up about halfway and it powers off.  When I tried to load the inf file it states it's not compatible.  I seem to be missing something here: also how do format the CF drive for the Karma?

Thanks for any help!

Have you reflashed your Karma since installing the CF card?  This will also format the CF card, provided you select the right option.
If you haven't already, grab the firmware update utility from the Karma Support Page on Rio's site.  It should detect your Karma and allow you to flash the firmware.  Check the "Also remove all content from the player (format)" box to do a format of the CF card.

gomtuu, what battery did you use for this mod?
I initially was planning on just modding my karma with a 120gig zip drive but forgo a battery and just use the player in my car. But if you are able to squeeze everything inside the case with minimal modifications, why the heck not get a battery as well!

Here's the money shot! :) I have a few more photos from the assembly that I can post if anyone's interested.

By the way, final weight is 180g, or about 20g heavier than the original Karma. Could be partly due to the higher-capacity battery.
can i just say that this is simply glorious. congratulations - absolutely phenomenal.
