Subject: Add another one to the list...
It suddenly occurred to me that it had been a while since I had seen "The Riches" advertised on FX (starring Mini Driver, Eddie Izzard et al). That's because IT'S CANCELED.

That's right, FX's second highest-premiering show was canceled after its second season. As such, this thread is now the official GOOD SHOW GONE AWAY thread. Add shows as you see fit. Let me start:

Rome
The Riches
Firefly
Arrested Development

This is going back a few years, but Freaks And Geeks was a great show that was canceled by NBC after only 12 episodes during the 1999-2000 season. They had a great cast and great writing.

The remaining episodes were eventually shown on Fox Family before being released on DVD. The DVD release was something of a battle too, because they had used a lot of great music from the show's era (1980) and it was apparently quite difficult licensing it all.

Some of the cast who have gone on to bigger and better things:
Linda Cardellini
Seth Rogen
Jason Segel
James Franco

This is going back even further, but Profit comes to mind. Brilliantly twisted, but too dark for its time and network.

I thought Drive had a lot of talent and potential behind it, and Fox dropped it hard after a few episodes.

Then there's The Dresden Files. Oh, and Thief, which at least made it through its 6-episode mini-series run before not being optioned for further production...By the way, if you haven't caught Thief before (caught Thief? har har?), you can see the show in its entirety on Hulu. I highly recommend it. Andre Braugher is some kind of higher life form.

Yeah, Profit was good and twisted....

Don't forget about Sportsnight, which was a bit more of an ordinary sit-com, but pretty good.

This year, ABC cancelled Pushing Daisies, which was much more saccharine, but it really had some hilarious twists.  All the weird stuff about Chi McBride's character made of for ridiculous romantic triangle crap of the others.
They should have had more for Swoosie Kurtz than "drunken Aunt," though...

I also miss Two Guys, a Girl & a Pizza Place (later just Two Guys & a Girl), which was fairly ordinary --but David Ogden Stiers had absolutely killer non sequiter lines, borrowed from random movies...

[to two Policemen, come to look for noise-violating bash:]  "this is not the Party you're looking for..."
If I remember correctly, he also summarized the story-line from First Blood, as an anecdote from his life.  Maybe it was Die Hard... whatever, it had me roflol!

On the topic of shows canned at the 2-season mark, how about Twin Peaks? Sure, the second season had some clunkers, but it really picked up steam by the end and then left us desperately, desperately hanging...

Well, Lynch had decided to end Twin Peaks, once ABC forced them to reveal the killer, and he couldn't come up with a more compelling main plot to fill the void (Lynch/Frost had both said they would have preferred to make every main character possibly the murderer, and never truly reveal the actual killer).

We have a rule in our house: No new show until it's 3rd season premier.  We've learned that after suffering the canceling of these great shows (of course including the others above):

- Wonderfalls
- The Inside
- Pushing Daisies (the one that made us put the rule into effect)
- The Others (little known show on NBC by Morgan/Wong from X-Files about a group of people with extraordinary powers trying to cope in the real world...hmmm...familiar).
- The 4400 (technically made it 3 years, but should have gone on longer)
- Lucky Louie
- Back to You (I know, a lame sitcom, but it was actually very clever and funny.  Reminded me of WKRP and Mary Tyler Moore)
- Studio 60 (that one STILL cuts us)

Now, for the REVERSE.  Shows on now, that DESERVE to be shit-canned, in order to make room for better offerings:

- The Fringe
- Knight Rider
- Any goddamn CBS crime drama
- Any reality show not named Survivor, Amazing Race, or Wipeout

I thought Knight Rider had been cancelled, again...

I forgot to mention an old show called the Visitor, which was a bit of a take-off on Starman.

I totally agree about reality shows, but especially Survivor.  Just like American Idol, they torture people and call it "entertainment," because the subjects are willing participants.

It's a crying shame that they cancelled Firefly before Survivor 1, and now these crappy ---let's watch real people squirm-- shows are considered successful.  At least it's criminals, on COPS.  (which I also don't watch)

One season of the Mole was the exception.  At least those people got a European vacation out of it and a bit of a good time.  All the orginality in the show was sucked out in one season, though.  Celebrity Mole was the same caliber of crap as Dancing with the Stars --so shocking, from the same network.

The lack of originality is totally there, in all the CBS autopsy-based crime shows, and all the Law & Order series too.  They've just milked all the life out of them.  (Which is why the Women's Murder Club on ABC sucked, too.)

If you can get your hands on the original BBC version of Cracker, with Robbie Coltrain... that's a good crime drama.  (Although I think the show is long done)

I kind of like the Mentalist on CBS.  It's a CBS crime drama (first season, so possibly toast, next year).  It's pretty much a dramatic rip-off of the USA comedy Psych, though.  (Maybe that's why I like it...)

I also like Monk on USA, but it's a silly basic pretext.

I can't believe Knight Rider has not been cancelled yet. I watched about 1/2 the 1st episode and turned it off. Worst show on TV right now if it is still on.

Thank god for Netflix...

There's a new direct-to-dvd movie of Dead Like Me.  Only problem?  No Fuller involvement.

And no Rube, and a different Daisy. I'll give it a shot, but I'm not holding out for much, tbh.
