Subject: One, Truly Embarrassed Californian
Forget Obama vs. McCain.  There's a much more serious issue afoot tomorrow...

I truly hope my response to this thread tomorrow will be one of elation, but I honestly, truthfully think that my state -- California -- one of unabashed, unrelenting liberalism (that has been a joy to live in my entire life) will go the way of the homophobe, and pass Proposition 8.

Anyone here from California, and of voting age?  If so, thoughts on Prop 8?

All the dance majors here at UCI are highly anti-prop 8, surprisingly enough. Some of the ads have been fairly disgusting. I've gotta say though, call me an idealist, but I just can't really see it passing. I would say that the town of Irvine is about equally divided, and it has a reputation as being somewhat socially conservative, so I have a fair amount of hope.

To be honest, I would be very disheartened if prop 8 passed, but I also think that our country and in fact the world are moving somewhat inexorably towards affording gay couples more rights rather than fewer, on the whole, so it might be one or two or five or ten years later, but I think we'd see homosexual marriage legalized again before too long.

Actually, there seem to be at least two other straight guys here, out of around 30. It's very bizarre.

I haven't heard any exit polls yet, but the atmosphere here does seem quite hopeful.

I hope your 'how come' was intended the same way as his 'surprisingly enough'.  ;)

With ~9% of the electorate in, looks like 55% yes on prop 8, and 50% yes on prop 4, which would require minors to inform a parent, guardian, or family member before having an abortion performed on them.

This is upsetting. I feel like the counties left to go might be a little more likely to go no on both props, but it's still not encouraging.

Ah, I was uninformed - I had thought prop8 was *pro* marriage. I have since rectified my ignorance.

But it's not government intervention bullshit. I dunno how Propositions get on the ballot, or Minnesota for that case, but we passed one this election, which pisses the hell out of me. It's a blanket sales tax increase "for the environment."

It's ignorance that gets these outlandish things passed; ignorance of those wanting to pass it, and ignorance of those voting "For" because they don't read the print or think of the consequences. Yeah, 'save the environment' sounds like a good idea, but it'll just end up as bloat and waste. And now Minnesota (one of the most heavily taxed states) has another .25% tax. Friggin' great.

Googled:

Proposition 8, which would establish marriage as a union between a man and a woman, passed with 52.1% of the vote, against 47.9% opposed, with 94.6% of precincts reporting. The approval marks a stunning upset in a $70 million campaign that just weeks ago looked to be running in favor of preserving gay marriage rights.

Why do we have to call it marriage then if everyone is so god damned offended by gay marriage. Anything wrong with Civil Union?

I fully support the right of gay people to totally get screwed in a divorce... er dissolution... like the rest of us do. ;)

Either call all federal/state licenses "marriage" or "civil unions", but it has to apply to any combination of people.  Also, there are a load of provisional ballots to be counted yet, so prop 8 may still fail.  And if it doesn't, it'll be taken to the Courts, just wait.
