my new choice on tagging on the mac:

Wow what a blatant rip of the xScope logo.

Going to give it a whirl none the less - have yet to find something for OS X like thegodfather from Windows.

After trying it for a bit I can say it almost replaces the godfather for me. My gripes:
  • It isn't very smart about proper capitalization when renaming or tagging files
  • Doesn't seem to have variables for tagging

That is about all I'm missing from the godfather.

proper capitalization and character replacement is what i miss too. still it's the most useable tagger for me.
by tagging variables you mean something advanced like picard? http://musicbrainz.org/doc/PicardQt/Scripting

[ed] sent a couple suggestions to musorg's dev, let's see.

Things like %t for track from filename, %# for incremental track number by listed order and etc. when tagging.

Checkboxes for the fields like the godfather and even iTunes would be nice so its easy to overwrite tags like useless comments you'd rather have removed. That and support for more tags such as encoder and etc.

musorg is pretty handy freeware, still missing the likes of mp3tag but it sorts the basics out. Sometimes though my flac track title tags aren't taking so I have to double check that stuff using Play. I'm happy enough for this free software though. Cheers straycat.

cheers dom.
yeah, still use musorg too. sent an email to the dev a while back and just forward it again today, still no answer.
here's the transcript, just in case:

hi, sorry to bother you. i can't stand music taggers for mac except musorg.
just a couple questions about musorg's future development:

1. will it support custom character replacement other than just "replace spaces with underscore"? if i "Capitalize first letters", "name ii" will result in "Name Ii" when "Name II" is itended. Custom character replacement support helps with these tricky renamings (words before or after apostrophes, for example). that way i could set that "ii" should always be replaced with "II" independently of Capitalization options. or maybe a "Always Uppercase" and "Always Capitalize first letters" option with custom fields (i, ii, iii, iv, 'n' or 'til, or 'cause are examples).

2. automated capitalization and character replacement be applied both on tags and folder/file renaming?

3. move folders and option to delete processed empty folders on the renaming option?

ex:

rename: %g/%a/(%y) %l

source: music/albums/metallica - kill 'em all
destination: music/metal/metallica/(1984) kill 'em all

[x] delete processed empty folders
[x] also move non music files (for jpg art or lyrics txt files)

option to chose destination folder and then apply renaming pattern with slashes representing subfolder breaks.

4. ability to download cover art to album folder:

[x] save cover art to folder as ________.(dropdown menu with jpg, png, bmp, tiff)

in the underline above, option to include variables for the jpg name (%a - %l for example).

i'm really sorry to bother you.
just trying to make musorg better for me and some guys at riovolution.org

thanks and best regards

so, for music playing i now use just vox. despite its slow development (just 1 student/developer) it supports gapless, all common music formats + game music and cover art.
even if it doesn't yet have custom playlist creation or folder browser built-in, i know the developer is keen on this idea as opposed to a library concept.

for tagging i found easytag http://easytag.sourceforge.net/. natively, you have to build it from fink packages, for osx, but this guy http://marcoschuh.de/wp/?page_id=411 built a nice binary for us lazy asses.
from the screenshots, it might be the next good thing after musorg kicked the bucket.

one more player:
javatunes http://www.stigc.dk/projects/JavaTunes/

two more taggers:
entagged http://entagged.sourceforge.net/about.php
jtagger http://sites.google.com/site/dronten/jtagger (just mp3, i think)

all java. entagged looks less powerful than easytag but it has one case transformation option i used in tag & renamer and never saw in any other tagger: uppercase roman numerals. problem is that, unlike tag & renamer, all these taggers assume we just need half a dozen transformations instead of providing an option to create custom ones.
