Subject: HOW CAN ANYONE USE ITUNES
I am seriously super frustrated with iTunes.  I would much rather run foobar on OSX but what can I do?  All the other music players like songbird etc don't work as well with the rest of OSX and my iPhone, so I'm just trying to make the best of what I have.. iTunes.

Is there ANY way to make the UI resemble columns at all?  I REALLY don't need to see a redundant "artist / album / genre" thing for EVERY track.  Also, I can't put the track number on the left side of the song name.. and for some reason iTunes doesn't like my job of tagging so it just gets rid of them altogether??

Also is it possible to have iTunes NOT fuck with your organization?  I'm guessing it can't play by file tree structure?

Why can't iTunes use folder.jpg for album art? Why does it have to download ANOTHER jpeg to use? Is it because it's inherently shitty?

And for those who control iTunes with quicksilver how do I invoke -> browse album -> album -> tab -> play so that the new playlist that quicksilver creates plays in order of the track numbers and not alphabetically or random (even with shuffle OFF)?

I have tons more questions about it but if anyone can point me in the right direction (off a cliff, into oncoming traffic, etc.) that'd be very much appreciated.  kthxbai

I've never even considered trying ITunes, myself.

My brother "upgraded" to ITunes 7, I think, from the previous version --a long time ago.  Well, 7 (or whatever ver it was) was so buggy, he didn't like the way it worked... so, he tried to roll back to ver 6.

Except that the "upgrade" had made every song he had on his hard drive and his player incompatible with the old version.

So, his choices were learn to deal with the bugs or re-download, re-burn everything.

It's why I try to use as little proprietary software as possible.

Maybe you should try Linux for Macs?  (not helpful, I know)
Dude!  There's no WAY that's your daughter's favorite song!

Install Darwine and then run foobar.  You might have to get some additional DLLs via winetools in order for it to work (I did for using foobar under Linux, but the OSX packages might include them).  Of course, this will only work if you have a newer Mac with an Intel (x86) processor.

I just got the new 2.4GHz aluminum MacBook.. I guess I could use it to run foobar, but iTunes is compatible with everything else in OSX.. so it's convenient in that way.. but the UI is just awful and it doesn't let the user do anything.  there aren't any mods to it? I only found ways to make foobar look like iTunes.. now why would anyone want to do that?

iTunes is a bloated piece of shit, and as soon as MediaMonkey 3 supports my Touch, I'm gonna be running that instead. You make a good point nub, that it's all so convenient but not user friendly to someone who has used anything besides iTunes before, which is essentially the Mac OS experience. Great looks, nothing under the hood useful.

Wasn't Amarok getting ported to non-Linux platforms? It's not foobar, but it's not itunes.

noob, i have to agree with the guys.

i also have a macbook pro and don't use any of the proprietary programs. i tought it was a windows-only problem but no. mac proprietary software is limited and silly.
i relate to all your problems with itunes plus the fact that you need a plugin to play vorbis and that plugin doesn't read track number or track length meta-data, don't remember which.
songbird doesn't work for me either.

for music i use "cog": dead simple gui, no eq, no album art but you play what you want by folder structure.
you can remove the redundant artist/album/genre by chosing which columns to display (just track number, song title and track length for me). it hasn't been updated in long time, maybe the project was dropped but, along with "toolplayer", it's one of the few which play lovely gapless.

but i suggest you take a look at
http://www.hitsquad.com/smm/mac/AUDIO_PLAYERS_JUKEBOX/ or
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of_media_players#A…
i can't use some of those because i only do vorbis but maybe you find an alternative.

noob, i tried a lot of audio players on the mac and none had those many options.
i guess you're stuck with iBloated.

or use a virtualization environment like parallels, vmware fusion, q, crossover and use your fave windows audio player. like you said, itunes is more compatible as a lot of 3-party software is designed specially for itunes, but most of those virtualization options let you run windows programs along with mac programs in seamless osx windows.

Wow... iTunes = Fail.
Totally diasppointed. A friend gave me a $30 iTunes gift card. So I signed up. Figured I'd burn my music, re-rip it and remove iTunes.
Purchased 2 albums. First album downloads... um.... twice aparently. It's listed in iTunes as one album and 24 tracks... it's only 12 tracks and every track is listed twice.
Purchased another album. 3 tracks download. Get an error mesage on track 4. Something about permissions, check my netowrk connection. Then proceeds to download 2 more tracks.  Error on track 7. Downloads 5 more tracks.
Check Purchases. There are exclamation points by the 2 tracks. Quick Google search = "Close and re-open iTunes. Any missing tracks should download". So I do. Now those missing tracks are listed nowhere and all my downloads are complete.

wtf Apple?!? Buggy fuxor'ed POS! So I am out those 2 tracks? One of this was the main reason I bought the album.

I've had good luck with customer service when my downloads got screwed up.

Also, google requiem.  Only works pre-itunes 8.0, though.
This is my signature, damn proud of it!

Just reported to customer service. We'll see.

Can anyone explain this crap, though? I bought this album through iTunes. It appeared to only download once. Yet in my list it shows twice. If I unselect one track the other corresponding track also deselects. So when I try to burn a CD it says there is not enough space because it looks like it wants to burn all tracks twice.

ARGH!!!!! SO frustrating!
