I contacted the company I bought the Toshiba from about the drive's problems. They don't seem convinced that it's a bad drive, but they offered to give me a refund minus a 15% restocking fee. They also gave me the option of shipping the Karma to them and letting them find a replacement drive that works in it, which sounds both appealing and scary...

So now I'm trying to decide what to do next.

Will they still charge a restocking fee for an even exchange?

The latest word from Rapid Repair is that the MK1231GAL is not a general-purpose hard drive. They say it has special firmware that makes it suitable only for certain devices. I'm not sure how convinced I am of this; the Toshiba website does mention a special firmware, but it sounds like the drive should work in a variety of devices. But maybe they're right.

In any case, the Rapid Repair product page did have a compatibility disclaimer saying that the customer agrees to take full responsibility if the drive isn't compatible with a non-Zune, non-iPod Classic device, so I can understand that they don't want to give me a full refund. I just wish they'd been more specific about the reason why the drive is incompatible.

I'd like to call Toshiba support to see if I can get their take on the situation. If they confirm that the MK1231GAL is not a general-purpose hard drive, then I might go with an 80GB 5mm ZIF drive instead. I'll have to look around.

what do you think of this?

Q: My system is not able to recognize all available capacity on my Hard Disk Drive. What do I need to do to utilize the complete hard drive?
A: There are some systems that are unable to recognize the new larger Hard Drives on the market. 3rd party software is available that breaks the "capacity barrier". A suggestion is Disk Manager DiskGo by Ontrack. Check with your local computer/software supplier for availability or contact the software manufacturer.

http://www.toshibastorage.com/main.aspx?Path=ServicesSuppo…

Disk Manager® Features
Supports installation of any manufacturer's hard disk drive, including Fujitsu, IBM, Maxtor, Quantum, Samsung, Seagate, Toshiba, and Western Digital.
Install hard drives over 137GB
A custom installation user guide compiles as you run the program - created for you according to your needs and the requirements of your system
Worry-free installation - partition and high-level format your hard drive automatically. Point and click to create customized partitions
No need to reinstall software - Disk Manager will automatically move important files and operating systems where you prefer to your old or new drive

http://www.ontrackdatarecovery.com/hard-drive-software/dis…

O Ontrak® Disk Manager é um software para a instalação de HDs de forma fácil de rápida. Ele suporta a instalação da maioria dos discos rígidos de qualquer fabricante. Suporta os seguintes sistemas de arquivos:

NTFS (Single volume);

-FAT 16/32

I don't think this has anything to do with the 137GB barrier... The MK1231GAL is only 120GB, and anyway I'm able to use hard drives bigger than 137GB in my computer, even through the same USB adapter I'm using for the MK1231GAL.

Hi!

Just thought I'd pop in to say that mkomfs from my webpage (http://bobcopeland.com/karma), is probably not industrial-strength enough to format the disk correctly by itself (it can make the directories fine but doesn't put any of the stuff in /var).

But it would be a piece of cake to take an existing partition and expand it.  I can make a little tool to do so if anyone wants it.

At this point, I don't know if I'll end up needing a utility like that, but it'd be nice to know it was out there.

I haven't been able to get hold of Toshiba support. I used their web email form and called them and left a message, but I haven't heard back, so I decided to return the MK1231GAL and get an MK1214GAH from Buy.com instead. It's still 120GB, but it's from a different line that doesn't seem to have the "new mechanical and firmware design" that the MK1231GAL has (which I guess was the problem). Also, the Rockbox Hard Drive Replacement page doesn't have a note about incompatibility for the MK1214GAH like it has for the MK1231GAL. So I think it'll work.

The downside is that it's 8mm thick instead of 5mm. It'll still fit, but I might have to Dremel the rectangular ridge on the back of the case a bit to make it easier.

The MK1214GAH is backordered, so I don't know when it'll get here. More as it develops.
