Subject: Recommendations wanted: Jogging headphones
Hi guys,

I have a pair of Koss headphones with a volume control on the cable.  Not bad.  But maybe it's time for a new pair.

On my long runs, I'll be out for an hour or so.  And I'm not a fan of ear buds.

Any thoughts?

My wife yelled at me for "needing to be plugged-in" while exercising. So I gave up exercising.

Sorry, I've got no headphone recommendations.  :-/

My Grado SR-80s sound great, but hurt my ears. They're not really appropriate for jogging, either.

Mixed reviews on the Sennheiser PMX70 headphones at
  http://reviews.cnet.com/headphones/sennheiser-pmx-70-sport…

But I don't see other sports headphones with great reviews.  I like the behind-the-head one piece style.  With separate over-the-ear units, I find I have to keep re-positioning them.

My Koss headphones are these :

The Koss P9 are $10 list price.  I'm betting the Sennheisers are better, so I ordered a pair on eBay.

I'll leave some feedback here when I've had a chance to try them out.

Just to throw my $.02 in - It's not that I don't jog, and in fact I do every day, but I prefer earbuds/IEMs. They're lighter, take up less space in my bag, and block out sound better, which is great when I'm on my 9th lap and don't feel like hearing myself about to die :-p Sorry I can't help more awesley, but if you decide to go with in ear headphones, check out the Sony MDR-EX51LP.

Subject: First impression - Sennheiser PMX70
I bought the Sennheisers on eBay for $35, including shipping.

The PMX70s definitely sound better.  More bass response than the Koss P-9s, with much crisper sound quality.

So what is "crisp" sound quality?   Perhaps this example will help quantify it.  After my run outside, I was cooling down on the treadmill, walking with my head down, when "Pros and Cons of Hitch-Hiking" came on.  About 1:40 into the song, there's the sound of a car driving by, going from right to left.  I jerked my head back, trying to see WTF was driving in my basement.

I've heard that song many times before and never had that reaction.

Fit is probably the biggest variable from person to person. When I first tried them on, the PMX70s were somewhat uncomfortable, too tight.   The earpieces press into my ears, placing all of the pressure there.  In contrast, the Koss band makes light contact against my head, taking up some of the pressure.

After bending them the Sennheisers neckband a little, I went running for about 50 minutes.  They were fine, they did not bother me at all.

After two runs with them, I'm quite happy.  I'll see if they hold up.

I do appreciate the reply.  I do some of my running on the street, so I don't want to block out external sounds.

Hiya,

After a month of using these headphones, I'm quite happy with them.  After a bit of bending, they're comfortable to wear for long periods.  Just ran the Detroit Half Marathon with them today and they were fine.  Quite comfortable and excellent sound.

Dang, a half marathon is a pretty good gauntlet for those headphones to run through (no pun intended, though it worked pretty well!). Glad you found something that you can enjoy while running!

Subject: Long-term Follow-up: Sennheiser PMX70
Greetings,

The PMX70s served me well.  I wore them while running (5 half-marathons and my first full), lawn work, and snow shoveling.  They eventually fell victim to the problem that I read about:  fragile wiring.  The right ear phone went out.

I don't like the wire flopping around me when I'm running, so I pin it to my shirt in 2 or 3 places.  I went out shoveling the snow and didn't bother with the pins.  Maybe I yanked the wire.  The right channel became intermittent, but mostly dead.

Meanwhile, Sennheiser has replaced them with PMX80.  I bought a set from accshack on ebay.  I tried to do a fair A / B comparison, left ear phone only.  The 80s seem to have more bass response.

TL; DR  The PMX70s were good.  Broke after 1 1/2 years of heavy use.  Replaced them with PMX80.

Is there anyone out there?

I got the 80s and liked them.  Same initial problems with fit as I had with the PMX70s.  They adjusted pretty good, but I never managed to adjust as well as I would have liked.  Still, the sound was good and the less-than-perfect fit didn't bother me.

They met the same fate as their predecessors.  Apparently fragile wiring led to the right side not working.

I'm not sure I'm willing to throw money at a new pair if they're only going to last me a little over a year.  So I'm going to try another brand.

I just ordered Phillips SHQ4000 Headphones from eBay.  $24.

Once I have them, I'll leave feedback.  Maybe it will help someone who finds this thread with a google search.

The Phillips came in today.   Used them while working in the yard, plugged into a Sanza Fuze.  Went for a run, used my trustworthly Cali.  And I'm listening to them now, plugged into my laptop.

They are very comfortable.  More so than either Sennheiser.  However, the audio quality is a step down.

The search continues for the ultimate headphone.  Maybe I'll dig out the soldering iron and see if I can put a new plug on one or both of my dead Sennheisers.
