You're my hero

So is the wheel really not physically attached to the mainboard?  It certainly appears that way from your pictures.

Wow, Brez!!!! Thanks for that.  I was curious, but not curious enough to tear mine apart, just yet.

Nice pictures, and nice job opening it up. Did you damage anything getting the wheel off? How did you do it? Also, what's the white connector near the headphone jack on the component side?

It does indeed look like the board element of the wheel has no rotating parts. The two black components in between the pushbuttons are probably reed switches; it looks like there's a series of 9 magnets on the underside of the wheel itself that activate them as the wheel spins. A nice robust design, and it shouldn't be too hard to make a new, flatter wheel.

I would have rather it be a standard compact flash type hard drive, though.

The radio card slot (take your battery out and have a look :-D ).

Yep, its held in place by the clips (put wheel here) and held together by the small metal circle bit (
wheel in bits
)

No, but the wheel is a pain to put back together.
To get the wheel off, just pull it.

If you haven't already taken your player apart it is very easy; take the metal back off, then there are 5 screws and some clips on the sides (be carefull with these if you don't want gaps when its back together, particularly the left clip because there's no screw on that side. )

Thanks. Can you tell what part of the wheel is magnetic? On the board, it looks like the sensors could be the two black components between the switches or the four white ones on the outer edges.

Also it looks like the fact that the wheel is attached by a ribbon cable means it would be relatively easy to rig a wheel lock switch.

If you look at this pic the magnet is the slightly grey ring (its easier to see the grey vs the silver at the bottom of the pic).

Yes, it looks like the black sensors are what read the magnets movement.

Duh!, What a dummy I am.  I spent the better part of 1/2 an hour persuading my cousin that I needed him to hack the firmware to see if we could unpin the volume from the wheel.

My low tech, not so pretty fix (but no one sees it, anyway) fix.  I slid a 1/4"  X 1/4" piece of 3M double sided, heavy duty, mounting tape beneath the outside wheel edge and the player.  Figured that would allow it enough give for activation, but stop it from spinning.  It does, works great.  I'm back in love again.  I'm so glad for screws instead of clips, made this a 5 minute job.

If you do this, make sure you fix the wheel in the position you want the indicator at.  I fixed mine to point to the Menu.

Sorry about my rant earlier.

So, if I understand you correctly, you actually froze the wheel? The only problem with that is no more seek and pitchbend access. At least it's easily reversible. In a couple of weeks i'll have the time to look into the lock switch and maybe even making a new, flatter wheel. If I do that the light will sit in the center to illuminate exactly where the center button is.

Yes, no more pitchbend & seek.  I like to keep pitchbend at 100%, so no loss for me.  The aggravation of the wheel adjusting volume, pitchbend and seeking when I didn't want it to was ruining my listening experience and I'm not taking the time to think about a wheel lock key until after the holidays.

The drive is the "new" standard for 1" HDDs - this drive is physically and electrically interchangeable with Hitachi and Seagate's new 1" drives. Nobody is shipping over 12GB yet though... but when they do, they should just drop in :)

Hey, unexpected compatibility; that's the best kind!
