Subject: rt's fix for USB problems
Quote by elkhorn:
When I plug in the Karma I get a message that says " this is a high speed device and it is pluggged into a low speed usb port. You need a high speed usb controller to function at maximum performance." I have battled it out with HP and they said there is nothing wrong with the USB. Songs are transferring at an average of about 15 seconds. I was recently transferring around 700 songs and it was taking a long time.

This problem is often caused by outdated or flaky USB 2.0 drivers, and can be corrected by updating the driver's to the latest version.

However, I would forget windows update and forget your manufacturer, as none of them will generally offer the updated driver's you need (and in the case of MSupdate may totally frag your system instead... ie, don't install driver's from MS update, EVER!). Service pack 1 includes some fixes for USB 2.0, but it likely won't install the necessary driver's required for your card or motherboard.

(To the person who asked about SP1, it is essentially a huge "update" for windows XP that installs a host of windowsupdate security fixes, patches and larger system fixes all at once. All MS OSes have such SP released fromt ime to time. As an example Windows 2000 is on like SP4 or something, and they are currently testing SP2 for Windows XP.)

If you have a recent intel processor on a machine by a "name" manufacturer (Dell, HP, Compaq, Gateway, Toshiba, Micron, etc.) you almost definitely have:

1. USB 2.0 on the motherboard itself (preferable)
2. An Intel motherboard

To update the driver's for your system you want to download the latest installer from Intel's website. However, you need to MAKE SURE you get the right ones for your specific chipset (different processor versions use different chipsets). To accomplish this download and run the "Chipset Idenitification Utility" at the link below:

http://downloadfinder.intel.com/scripts-df.../eng/chipid.exe

It will give you a number for your processor, like "Intel® 845G/GE/GL/GV/PE chipset" would indicate I have a version (either G, GE, GL, GV, or PE ) of the 845 chipset. BTW, note that some laptops use desktop chipsets (like the example I've mentioned, which is from a Toshiba 2430-s255 laptop), and the Pentium 4 (no M for "mobile") is a desktop chip.

Once you've figured out which chipset you've got in your machine go here:

http://www.intel.com/support/chipsets/

Pick the right entry (desktop, laptop, etc.) and then pick the chipset. You will be presented with a list of drivers, and you want to download the "INF Update" for your chipset. The entry in the download list (once you reach the download page) should look something like this:

"INF Update Utility [INFINST.EXE] (1428KB) 5.1.1.1002 12/12/2003 Download "

Download the file, unplug all USB devices, close all other programs, run the update, then reboot. I say unplug usb devices because I've seen update problems from live USB devices that cause the USB driver's on a hub not to get properly installed. If you have a USB mouse or something you need while installing just unplug it before rebooting and don't plug it back in until the OS has fully reloaded and finished updating.

For all you non-intel motherboard folks (Via, whoever AMD uses... do they make their own boards?) you can likely find the same kind of things at the maker for your board. Most of the people who don't have Intel will likely have built their own PCs so they know what the hell their doing anyway. The links below may be useful:

AMD Drivers Downloads Page (look at right side): http://www.amd.com/us-en/Processors/TechnicalResources/0,,…

VIA USB Driver's Page: http://www.viaarena.com/?PageID=298

(and then there's too many more to list, like SiS, ABIT, ASUS, MSI, etc., etc.)

For all you people with add-on USB adapter cards look on the website of the card's manufacturer for updates. The secondary cards are always a little unstable since they have to fight for resources with the motherboard itself (and weren't planned for in IRQ assignments, etc.), but you can likely find updated drivers that will help.

...because I am not a Special Snowflake.
